Danzón ***

Director: María Novaro
Year: 1991
Writers: María Novaro, Beatriz Novaro
Cinematographer: Rodrigo García

This film set in the port city of Veracruz Mexico and focused on the story of a young woman looking for her lost dance partner in a Cuban style of dance "Danzón" which became very popular in the coastal region of Mexcio. Its really about the changing status of women in Mexico during this time. Julia is living out a freedom that many women in Mexico would have never dreamed of before, but she is still gawked and whistled at, as she explores lifestyle choices beyond the stereotyped roles that men would have her play. An interesting film, it never gets too melodramatic, I think the restraint in the story is actually a strength here.

A good movie. Perfect for a women's liberation themed film series. Just so happens I saw this in the same week I saw "Thelma & Louise" and "Happy-Go-Lucky." I could definitely suggest the same trilogy for anyone.
