Funny People ***

Writer/Director: Judd Apatow
Year: 2009
Cinematographer: Janusz Kaminski

Good premise, but not a tight enough film, and the comedy isn't funny enough. Personally, I'm tired of sex jokes.

Apatow turns out "hmm, good" movies but hasn't yet turned out a VERY good movie. Sure his stuff is funnier than most comedies these days, but that doesn't mean they are great films.

Invictus **

Director: Clint Eastwood
Year: 2009
Book by: John Carlin
Adapted by: Anthony Peckham
Cinematographer: Tom Stern

Uninspiring, a mess of a script and poorly directed, Morgan Freeman was born for this role, but never gets a chance to show his chops. Conflict never rose for me, and the rugby scenes don't make any sense, I don't get any sense of tension or what they are doing. There are no plays that are important, it seems like the scenes were an afterthought... "oh yeah, this is a film in which Rugby supposedly united a nation, I guess we should throw in some shots of the game..."

Eastwood needs to focus on making his last few films actually count. I understand he's trying to tell stories that are important to him, but he needs to slow down and tell them well.

Some really horribly over-bearing music cues too.
